WHAT IS GEOTHERMAL?

Save MONEY!

Geothermal is a type of heating and cooling system that uses the constant temperature of the earth as the exchange medium instead of the outside air temperature. Some refer to geothermal as GeoExchange, ground-source, or water-source heat pumps and have been in use since the 1940s. From the scorching heat to the sub-zero cold, below the ground the earth's temperature remains at at relatively constant temperature. Depending on the latitude, ground temperatures range from 45 degrees F to 75 degrees F, therefore the ground temperature is warmer than the air temperature. A geothermal system takes advantage of this by exchanging heat with the earth through a ground heat exchanger. The installation cost is typically returned to you in energy savings in 5-10 years. The system life is estimated at 25 years for the interior components and 50+ years for the exterior components. There are approximately 50,000 geothermal heat pumps installed in the United States each year.

  • REDUCED DEPENDENCE ON FOSSIL FUELS

  • HOT WATER HEATING. SUPER EFFICIENT MODELS CUT YOUR WATER HEATING COSTS BY HALF!

TAX CREDIT INCENTIVES

Geothermal systems are eligible for tax credits! There are State tax credits, BGE credits, and County tax credits.

Federal Tax Credit:

  • 30% of total system cost

  • No limit to credit amount

  • Can be used to offset AMT tax

  • Can be used in more than one year

  • Can be combined with solar and wind credits

  • Eligibility:

  • Home must be located in US

  • Does not have to be your main home

  • Includes houses, apartments, condos, mobile homes

  • Geothermal heat pump must meet Energy Star requirements

Claiming the credit:

Please use IRS Form 5695 or talk to your accountant.

Example:

Taxpayer spends $12,000.00 to install heat pump and duct work in home and spends $10,500.00 on the exterior drilling for a total of $22,500.00 spent on installing geothermal. The taxpayer is eligible for 30% tax credit: $22,500.00 x 30% = $6,750.00 credit. This brings the total cost for system to 15,750.00!

State of Maryland Tax Credit:

  • $3,000.00 credit per project (capped) for new geothermal installations

  • As of 10/14/14, geothermal installations that are replacing an existing geothermal unit will no longer be eligible for the $3,000 grant. In order to receive this grant, homeowners must install an entirely new geothermal system with the accompanying loops or wells.

  • As of 10/14/14, geothermal heat pump replacements will be eligible for a $500 grant.

  • Grants are allocated on a first come/first served basis across technologies and are subject to change in amount and existence based on funding availability

Geothermal Renewable Energy Credits:
Geothermal Systems installed in Maryland are eligible for renewable energy credits!

Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) certifies the bearer owns one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity generated from a renewable energy resource. Renewable energy credits are tradeable, non-tangible commodities that represent proof that 1 MWh of electricity was generated from a renewable energy resource and was then fed into the shared system of power lines that transport energy. The average geothermal system generate 40 GRECs each year. GRECs are included in the State of Maryland’s Tier 1 REC category.

What does that mean for you? It means money deposited into your bank account just for having geothermal!
